Dennis Ferguson
May 2, 1948 – July 31, 2010
The CCGA lost a valued member and friend in Dennis Ferguson (62) who passed away unexpectedly Saturday night July 31, 2010. Dennis served the CCGA as board member at large this past year and was a member of this year Championship team in the recently concluded Tuesday twilight league. Dennis was featured in our first “Members Profile Corner” in the February issue of this newsletter. He will be missed by all of us and our sincere condolences go out to his wife Carol and his daughters Tara and Tracy. Services for Dennis are pending.

1. A player rotates his ball on the putting green to line up the trademark with the hole. He did not lift the ball, mark its position, or change its position. Is there a penalty?
2. A and B are partners in four-ball stroke play. A's tee shot at a par-3 entirely over water comes to rest in the water hazard. As B's tee shot comes to rest on the putting green, Player A elects not to play a ball under Rule 26-1 and proceeds to the green. B four putts and scores 5 for the hole. May A return to the tee and put another ball into play under Rule 26-1?

Joke of the month
Submitted by Ron Hein
A man is watching a game of golf on TV. But he keeps switching channels to a dirty movie featuring a lusty couple having raucous sex. He says to his wife.” I don't know whether to watch them or the game"
"For Heaven's sake, watch them," his wife says. "You already know how to play golf!!!”
August Truism
Curly, downhill, left-to-right putts are usually followed by curly, uphill, right-to-left putts.
Picture of the Month

Intense was the word of the day in the recent Tuesday Twilight league play off round last week at Churn Creek. The team of Craig Burkett, Dennis Ferguson, Bob McAllister, and Shawn Baird with help from alternates Tom Devore, Jim Dillon, and Earl Poytress became our 2010 TTL Champions.
The lighter side
“Did You Know”
In this segment we will attempt to teach our loyal readers the many definitions of golf terms, sayings, phrases, and or folklore.
Amateur side - This a derisive term for the low side of the hole when putting. Amateur golfers often miss their putts short, or come out on the low side of the hole, meaning the ball hasn't been struck boldly enough to have a chance of falling in. Although a missed putt counts one stroke no matter where it stops, balls that run by the hole are apparently more "professional."
Analyst - Psychiatric specialist who treats individuals suffering from the delusion that playing golf is a form of pleasure.
Approach Shot - A shot which, if it had not caught the lip of the bunker and dropped back into the sand, would have rolled across the green and gone into the water.
Apron – A fringe of low grass, or "frog hair," surrounding the green from which a tricky, easily flubbed shot that is half pitch and half putt is made. It is called a "chupp," a "putch" or, simply, "chin!"

Dear Membership
I wish to thank all who contributed or wished well and gave prayers for Esther McAllister. I met many of you in person but could not see you all, so perhaps Rick can pass along my sincere thanks for your generous help and contributions. Esther is struggling with influenza now, 7/26, (you catch everything in the hospital) but hopefully will survive to undergo the next round of chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. Thanks again to a great bunch of friends and associates in the Churn Creek golf club.
Bob McAllister.
Dear Bob,
It always amazes me how we can all pull together when it really counts. I know I speak for all, that it is our pleasure to be of help. We hope for the best for you and Ester

Meet Don Carver
In Don’s own words; I was born in southern West Virginia in a coal mining and railroad town called Williamson on January 7, 1932. We lived in the Appalachian Mountains. Williamson, and across the river at Pikeville, Kentucky was the turf of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s.
We moved a little later to Laeger, West Virginia, my mother’s home town. I grew up in Laeger and graduated from high school in 1950.
In 1950, I joined the U.S. Navy and my first assignment was Guam for 18 months. I returned to San Diego, CA in 1952 and went to a tech school, then assigned overseas to Japan and Korea for 18 months. I was on the Carrier: Oriskany and the Walker. From there I returned to the states to Naval Air Station, Alameda, CA and from there to Naval Air station, Columbus, Ohio. In 1956 I switched from USN to USAF. I retired from the USAF, with 20 years total active duty service in 1970. I’m a veteran of Korea and Viet Nam. During the 60’s I was assigned to Pakistan for a 15 month overseas duty. I was attached to the USAF Security Service. I was in Teas 3 different times and recruited for the USAF for 8 years in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
I got married to my high school sweet heart, Jeanette Riffe in 1954. We had 3 children: Angela, Greg and Melissa and 4 grandchildren. My wife had asthma from age 16. We had 3 severe cold winters in Columbus, Ohio. So, in 1979 I transferred to Sunnyvale to get her in a warmer climate. Then 2 years later Jeanette died from asthma complications in Sunnyvale. My children and I took her body back to West Virginia to our home for burial. She was only 48 years old.
Later on, while working and living in Sunnyvale, I met my present wife, Jean Lamplough.
We met at a night club in Sunnyvale. Jean had lost her husband and high school sweetheart, Jack Lamplough to cancer. He was only 46 years old. Jean and I got married in Carson City, Nevada. They had 3 children: Jackie, Jan and Joy and six grandchildren. Then just 2 years ago in Redding, Jean suffered a tragic loss in her family. Her first born child: Jan died of MS. She was only 53 years of age.
After Air Force retirement, in 1971, I was hired by the U.S. Dept. of Defense to work in procurement. I held 2 different positions, contracts negotiator and Small Business Specialist.
Our department was involved in finalizing contracts, in purchases of military hardware for the Armed Forces. Our projects included the B-1 Bomber, Nike Missiles, F-16, and Trident Missiles for the Navy’s submarine fleet, tanks, aircraft engines, and booster engines for NASA programs. I traveled extensively in the Bay area and across the United States.
Jean was working for a large defense contractor when we met, and we both retired in 1989 and moved to Redding, Jean’s home town.
One interesting experience happened in 1956, when I was stationed at an Air Force Radar Base in West Virginia. Among other duties, I was assigned as Casualty Assistance NCOIC for West Virginia. An Air Force member was killed and his wife was in a women’s Federal Prison at Alderson, West Virginia. I completed my duties involving finances due t the widow, and while there, the prison guard introduced me to a VIP in-mate, her name was Tokyo Rose. She was working making Navy dungarees and shirts. She had been imprisoned there and pardoned and released about two years later by the President. This prison was the same one in which Martha Stewart served her time.
My hobbies have always included: traveling, hunting, and fishing, then golf came along.
I would like to be remembered as an average person who loves his wife and family, and likes to take each day at a time, and smell the roses on the way. I’m still looking for the rocking chair.
Now that’s some story….

Answer to Woody’s Quiz
1. Yes, one stroke for touching the ball other than as provided for in the Rules -- Rule 18-2a. Under Rules 16-1b and 20-1, a ball on the putting green may be lifted (or touched and rotated) after its position has been marked. If the player had marked the position of the ball before rotating it, there would have been no penalty.
2. Yes. However, he may be subject to penalty under Rule 6-7 for unduly delaying play.
