CCGA Tuesday League starts

Tuesday twilight league started on May 18, 2010 with eight teams. This year the league has adopted three different formats. Chapman Alternate shot, Stableford Format, and Match play singles. The early indication is the new formats are a big hit with the players.  Alternate players also have a new format in which to compete. Each team has drafted alternate players. These players can play in the usual Alternate play and or for their teams when needed. What was added this year is the any team can have an alternate player play for them provided the home team does not need them (first rights) or the team is not playing the Alternate’s home team.  So far we have had the need to activate many Alternate players. I encourage all alternates to show up when they can to help.

As of this date the team of Craig Burkett, Bob McAllister, Shawn Baird, Dennis Ferguson, and Elmer Winfree leads the Slacker Hackers Division of 8 points. Leaders for the Dirty Duffers are the team of Kenneth Gunter, Lee Lamp, Joe Watson, Ron Rowton, Don Morris, and James Dillon also with 8 points.

June NCGA Senior four ball net

The NCGA Senior four ball net 1 best ball tournament is schedule to go off on Saturday June 12, 2010. Sign up for this event is open to any two man team. Players must be over 55 years of age.  This is a 18 hole event, winners will move on to represent our club.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity. The CCGA will also pay the wining team travel money to play at the next location. With all the new members to our club I would think we would a great competition.

From the Woody’s Perch

“The Rules of Golf”

Loren Woodmansee

Q: 1
A player's ball came to rest 20 yards over a green and beyond a white stake which the player's caddie said was a boundary stake. The player played a provisional ball which came to rest short of the green, but closer to the hole than his original ball. The player played the provisional ball onto the green. At that point, he walked behind the green towards his original ball, which had been visible all along, and discovered that the white stake was not a boundary stake and that his original ball was in bounds. What is the ruling?

 Q: 2
In stroke play, a group was playing a hole when it was announced that play was suspended. The group discontinued play for 10 to 15 minutes and then decided to complete the hole, even though the Committee had not yet announced resumption of play. Is this permissible?

Meet Charles Gilbreath

CCGA Activities Chairman

Sir Charles of Gilbreath was brought into this world on June 17, 1947 in El Centro, California. Before he reached his first birthday the family picked up and moved to Monahans, Texas, where his older brother was born. When Charles was old enough to start school they moved back to Southern California. Charles says “We lived in several towns in the L.A. area, from Long Beach, Compton, Bixby Knolls, Lakewood to Anaheim”  He attended four grammar schools and one junior high school. As Charles puts it “in 1960 my folks were going to go up to Alaska to homestead a section of land. Alaska at that time was offering land to get people to move there. They got as far as Redding, loved it so much, especially the lakes, (we were avid water skiers and loved fishing), so we moved here. We lived in a 16 x16 Army tent that summer on Shasta Lake, at Bailey Cove. I had a blast.

Summer ended and we moved to Redding, 1207 C St. in Enterprise to be exact where I started my eight grade school year at Parsons Junior High and attended my freshman through senior years at Enterprise High School. Charles enrolled into Shasta College to avoid the draft during the Viet Nam war, but that only lasted 6 months and they took that exemption away. I got drafted and spent all of 1968 in Viet Nam during the Tet Offensive. I was in the 25th Division, 2nd & 12th. Infantry Company. My base camp was Dau Tang, Viet Nam, but was only there 3 months. We were out in the field the rest of the time until I got to come home. I was a Forward Observer. My job was to call in 4.2 mortar support fire. I left Viet Nam Dec. 31, 1968, got to see the 1969 New Year come in twice, that was great.

Came back to Redding and have been here ever since. Got married in 1969 to my girl friend that I met at Enterprise, she was a freshman and I was a senior when we met. We had 3 boys, Steve, Scott, and Shawn. Their all married now and I have 4 grand children with another on the way by my youngest son, Shawn. We were married 7 years, it didn't work out. I met my current wife Chris, in 1979. I was set up on a blind date by some friends. We hit it off and went together five years and have been married now going on 26 years. I have a stepson by her, Jeff Clark. He's the Post Master in Weed, Ca. My wife is the Credit Manager for all of Meeks Lumber yards north of Chico. She's been there going on 27 years. In 1965, when I was finishing high School, my Dad got into the trucking business. A company called Valley Engineers they got the contract to install the Bella Vista Water Project, 35 miles of pipeline. We supplied the back-fill for the project. I joined the Operating Engineers, Local 3 at that time, worked all over California, and stayed in the Union till I retired in Dec., 2004. One of my fondest memories is when my wife and I and our closet friends went to St. Lucia, in the Caribbean and went zip lining in the tropical forest.

I feel my greatest achievement is having 4 sons, which includes my stepson. They are great young men, not afraid to work and know how to be self supporting. (I got on their ass's a lot.) As for hobbies, I used to do a lot of snow skiing, but gave that up for a disease called golf that I can't seem to shake. We ask Charles what do you want people to remember you by and he said” I would like people thank of me as a honest and fair person” Last word I would like to say, " When working with a Table Saw, KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE SAW BLADE!!!

The lighter side

An amateur was talking to his golf pro.
Amateur: "Teach me how to get my ball to backspin?''
Pro: "Before I answer that, tell me, how far you hit a 5 iron?''
Amateur: "About 130 yards'
Pro: "Then why in the world would you want the ball to spin back!?''

Answer to Woody’s Quiz

A: Q1
The player should have determined the status of his original ball before playing a second stroke with the provisional ball and, since the original ball was not out of bounds, he should have abandoned the provisional ball. When he failed to do so, the second stroke with the provisional ball was a stroke with a wrong ball -- Rule 27-2c.
In match play, the player lost the hole (Rule 15-3a).
In stroke play, he incurred a two-stroke penalty (Rule 15-3b) and was required to hole out with the original ball.
A: Q2
No. Competitors playing a hole when play is suspended may only continue play of that hole if they do so without delay -- Rule 6-8b. The group in question was in breach of Rule 6-8b. The penalty is disqualification.
