“The Rules of Golf”

Q: As a player is climbing a tree to play a ball lodged in the tree, the ball falls to the ground. Does the player incur a penalty?
Q: The Committee incorrectly calculated a competitor's handicap and posted it on the notice board as 17 when it should have been 16. The competitor won an 18-hole stroke-play event as a result of the error. May the Committee correct the error several days later and retract the prize?
You will find the answers to Woody’s Perch Quiz on the last page

Meet Marvin Wittner

Marvin Wittner was born in Redding California on April 5th 1932. He spent all his youthful years growing up in Redding Ca. Marvelous Marv attended Magnolia Pine St. and Shasta Union High School. Marv always bragged he graduated after just two terms in high school (Roosevelt’s and Truman’s) he then advanced his learning prowess at Shasta College. Whiles serving in the U.S. Air Force he got the opportunity to attend the University of Illinois for one year. Another school of note that Marv attended is the First Baptists Divinity School in Berkeley.
Marv has lived in Redding off and on for 78 yrs. He is married to his beautiful wife Paula for 40 yrs they have been blessed with 5 children names are Lexi, Kalan, Eric, Craig, and Wendy. Marv and Paula also have 8 grandchildren. They are Grant, Hailey Mae, Race, Riley, Hannah, Lee-Ann, Gavin, and Abigale.
After Serving in the Air Force, Marv was in the Electrical and Appliance business with his father Bill Wittner for 10 yrs here in Redding. He then chose to go to work for Montgomery Ward where he logged 30 yrs of service. He worked for them in Redding, Alaska, Tucson, and Las Vegas. Upon his retirement he moved back to Redding. After a short time Marv decided to go back to work part time. So I guess you could say he is really semi-retired working part time, and playing golf when ever time allows.
Marv’s fondest memories are the many camping trips with his wife and kids where they enjoyed fishing, and hunting, in Alaska. His hobbies are golf, golf, golf, and then when he has the time flying, hunting, fishing, camping, and then more golf with all his friends at Churn Creek.
Marv has one little favorite story. When he first meet his wife Paula (Girl Friend then) they were fishing up in the Lassen Forrest, it was their first fishing trip together. Marv was watching her fish this stream while he was sitting in back of her on the side of the mountain. Paula was unaware of Marvin watching her (sneaky) Paula had two fish dangling from her back pocket as there were no where else to put them. Marv noticed she kept putting her hand up to her mouth every-time she caught a fish, I started to laugh and she turned around, and asked me what I was laughing at? I asked her why she kept putting her hand up to her mouth ever-time she caught a fish. Paula simply replied, she kept her fish eggs under he tongue because she had no where to put them! Oh I don’t know if Marv is yanking our chain or not but for some reason I can believe it! Marv closed his story by saying; I married that gal 40 yrs ago and I hope to be with her for at least another 20.
It couldn’t happen to a better person…

The lighter side
Equal privileges
A country club didn't allow women on the golf course. Eventually, there was enough pressure that they decided to allow women on the course during the week. The ladies were satisfied with this arrangement, and formed a women's club, and became very active.
After about 6 months, the club board received a letter from the women's club complaining about the men urinating on the golf course. Naturally, they just ignored the matter. After another 6 months, they received another letter reminding them of the previous letter and demanding action.
After due deliberation they sent the women a letter advising them that they had been granted equal privileges!
May Truisms
1. Always concede the fourth putt!
2. Bunkers have the unnerving habit of rushing out to meet your ball.
3. Last but not least the Pat Bott rule; coincidentally the only remaining set of clubs in the professional's shop was made especially for you.

Answer to Woody’s Quiz
1. Yes, one stroke under Rule 18-2a and the ball must be replaced. How cruel!
2. Yes. There is no time limit on correcting such an error. Rule 34-1b is not applicable since it deals with penalties, not with Committee errors. The competitor should not be disqualified but his net score should be increased by one stroke.
