November Truism’s

A vacuum is the space between your ears that becomes entirely void of matter once you set foot on the golf course.

The lighter side
“Did You Know”

In this segment we will attempt to teach our loyal readers the many definitions of golf terms, sayings, phrases, and or folklore.
Be the ball Profound golfing advice uttered by Chevy Chase in the movie Caddyshack. Golfing geeks have picked up the expression and often use it during a round, to the great annoyance of their companions.
Beach, the bunkers, and other sand-covered areas at a golf course are known collectively as the beach.
Bent - The species of grass most often found on greens.
Bermuda & Blue - The species of grass most often found on fairways.
Bindweed, Bog Grass, Bulrushes, Eel Grass, Quack Grass, Reeds, Scutch, Sedge, Spurge, Stinkweed & Viper's Grass - The species of grass among which your ball is most often found.

Letters to the Editor
The following suggestions came in on our CCGA membership renewal form.

What do you see that the Board can do better?

From Jim Reyes
Perhaps for the winners of tournaments, that they be given a trophy or certificates.
Hold Board Meetings on Saturday mornings for a better turnout.

From Don Fox
Exercise the Board’s obligation to find and clamp down on, these members who are manipulating their indexes.  I believe you know who some of them are.  (Brandon needs to respond as to what the board has implemented, to address this problem.)

Editor’s note;

To; Jim Reyes, for some tournaments we do issue redeemable vouchers that can be used in the clubhouse for food and beverage and or toward greens fee dues. The problem here is that the low cost of playing sometimes out ways the giving of such prizes. Better turn out certainly would help this cause. As for the meeting on Saturday we did have one such meeting on Saturday and it seemed to be a good Idea. I’m sure the new board will take it under advisement.

To; Don Fox, Your question is one of the main issues that face the new board. Steps have been discussed in how we proceed as a club to deal with this problem. I know Tom Baird has a plan that would involve a committee of three to review such actions to be taken against those that disregard the by laws of this club and the NCGA as it pertains to this issue. An announcement will be made as soon as they finalize how they will take action.

Rick Faller

I was born on December 3, 1944 at the Wilshire Hospital in Los Angeles, Ca.  I was the youngest by 8 years of two children to Gene and Rosalie Faller. Soon after the war my father was discharged from the U.S. Army and we moved to Kingman, Arizona where my father worked in the Military war surplus graveyard dismantling World War II surplus bombers. We later moved to Alameda, California (a little island off the coast of Oakland) around 1949.

In Alameda I went to Haight elementary School, Alameda High School and Graduated from Encinal High in 1962. I joined the United States Army in May 1963. After Basic Training at Fort Ord Ca, I married my long time girl friend Sandy Cranfield on August 15, 1963. I returned to Ft Ord for my 2nd eight. (Advanced Infantry Training).  I then was transferred to the School of Finance Institute at Ft Ben Harris in Indiana for further training.  There I received a diploma in Finance and Accounting and Mechanized payroll (Computer Application), and Personnel Administration. I was then assigned overseas to Mainz, Germany. While in the European theater I was station briefly in the last Corporal Missile Battalion in Mainz. I was later assigned TDY where I briefly traveled around attached to the Adjutant General Office investigating payroll fraud.

After my return from overseas I worked for Title Insurance and Trust Co. where I studied Real Estate Law while working as a Title Searcher. After determining that it was a bit too stuffy for me I went to work for Grove Valve and Regulator as an assemblyman. In 1968 I went to work for the Oakland Tribune Publishing Company as a District Advisor which gave my wife and I the opportunity to purchase a home in Livermore Ca that same year. I worked 10 years at the Tribune at various positions and attended ext courses through on the job training from Chabot College during this time in, Business Administration.  In 1978 I went to work for The McClatchy Newspapers assigned to the Sacramento Bee Newspaper. My wife and I then moved to Redding, that same year.  I held various titles at the Bee as Regional Sales Manager, Distribution Manager, and State Circulation Director and finally, State Distribution manager. While at the Bee I was afforded the opportunity to experience extra training in education through ext courses at work. Among those were Marketing Strategy in News Media at Fresno State and various other ext courses from Sac State specializing in California Labor law and Independent Contract law. I retired on Jan 5, 2007. I have written sport recaps as a stringer and had many articles published by various publications such as Bleacher Report, The Dark Side (Raider Blogs) and ORIB

Fondest memories are many; however I particularly enjoyed the birth of my two daughters, Terry and Sherry. We have 5 Grandchildren Angie, Michael, Joshua, Dylan, and Troy. We have 3 Great Grand Children.

Sports; I played football in high school and later in life I played 12 years fast pitch softball and another 10 years slow pitch. I loved to golf and work around my house and spend time with my family.

Clubs and affiliations; I was a California Native Son for 25 years. I Was Vice Trader in the Redding Trade Club and I’m currently a member of ORIB (Oakland Raider Internet Boosters) I have also served the CCGA board as Secretary for two years. I’m presently the Website Administrator and Newsletter Editor for CCGA.

Favorite Movies; Hunt for Red October, We were Solders and all the Jason Bourne sequels.

Favorite Songs; “This is the Night.” for love” This was the song that Sandy and I first ever danced together. Also, Magic Carpet Ride, and White Rabbit….

Favorite Restaurant; Jacks bar and grill, New China, and Mill house Deli, and CeCe’s house.

Achievement; closing in on 48 years of bliss with my wife.

My Idol; I would have to say is my father who had a limited education and worked every day of his life while he physically could and he never took one dime of assistance or a handout. He served our country in the Unite States Army. Our family never went without.  He taught me to have a solid work ethic and the importance of being responsible for my actions. My Mom was as equal as she was the stay at home mother that was there everyday to make sure I got it. In the end I can only hope people will say he made his parents proud and more importantly that my family would be in agreement.

Picture of the Month

Joke of the month

The President has recently appointed a Golf Czar and major rule changes in the game of golf will become effective in November 2010.  This is only a preview as the complete rule book (expect 2000+ pages) is being rewritten as we speak. Here are a few of the changes.

Golfers with handicaps:
- Below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35%.
- Between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees.
- Above 18 will get a $20 check each time they play.

The term "gimme" will be changed to "entitlement" and will be used as follows:
- handicaps below 10, no entitlements.
- Handicaps from 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts.
- Handicaps above 18, if your ball is on green, no need to putt, just pick it up.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness and, most importantly, equality in scoring.  In addition, a player will be limited to a maximum of one birdie or six pars in any given 18-hole round.  Any excess must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par.  Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player actually making the birdie or par, can that player begin to count his pars and birdies again.  The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes, but the term 'net score' will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps of 18 and above.

This is intended to 'redistribute' the success of winning by making sure that in every competition; the above 18 handicap players will post only 'net score' against every other player's gross score.  These new rules are intended to CHANGE the game of golf.

Golf must be about fairness.   It should have nothing to do with ability, hard work, practice, and responsibility.  This is the "right thing to do."
Additional proposed rule for (seniors only? ---those who can drive a ball farther than 200 yards will receive a one stroke penalty each time that occurs and they will have to move their ball back to shortest drive on the respective hole.  Players who refuse to do that will be disqualified.
