“The Rules of Golf”

Loren Woodmansee
1. A player hits his tee shot into heavy rough approximately 150 yards from the teeing ground and, since his ball may be lost outside a water hazard, he plays a provisional ball. After searching briefly for his original ball he goes forward to play his provisional ball which is in a bush approximately 200 yards from the teeing ground. He deems his provisional ball unplayable and drops it within two club-lengths of where it lay under Rule 28c. Before playing the provisional ball, the player's original ball is found by a spectator within five minutes of the player having begun to search for it. What is the ruling?
2. In stroke play, a competitor's ball stops on the lip of the hole. In disgust the competitor knocks his ball off the green with the back of his putter. What is the ruling?

Laws of Golf

LAW 19:
When you look up and cause an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you should have continued watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.

The lighter side
“Did You Know”

In this segment we will attempt to teach our loyal readers the many definitions of golf terms, sayings, phrases, and or folklore.

Barky, When one of your shots strikes a tree and you still make par for the hole, you have made a barky. Golfers often include a barky as one of their junk bets during a match. (See James Richardson)

Be right; an urgent request a golfer makes of his ball during its flight to the green, usually occurring when the ball appears to be on line with the flagstick and the only doubt is whether the right club was used. The phrase is also used frequently by caddies who want to keep their jobs.

Banana Ball; 1. An especially curvaceous slice. A ball that starts to the right and continues to curve right until it nearly lands behind the golfer who hit it. This shot is one reason why the word fore is heard on the golf course nearly as often as more notorious four-letter words. 2. A Formal dance at an exclusive WASP country club.

Meet Carl Rowe

Carl Rowe was born on November 9, 1951 in Long Beach; Ca
He was the eldest of 4 boys. Carl pretty much grew up in Navato, in Marin County near San Francisco.

After his High School day’s, Carl attended University of Oregon for 5 years. He said he only has 4 units left to graduate. Carl has lived in Redding for the past 8 years although he often visited his parents over the years before moving here. Prior to moving to Redding Carl lived in San Ramon, Ca, in Contra Costa County area.

Carl as many of you know is married to CeCe Corbett who works at Churn Creek Golf Course. Carl says he thinks he may have finally got this one right after two previous tries. Carl and CeCe met through the local travel agency that handled Carl’s traveling needs while working in his restaurant business.

When ask where you met CeCe he explains his business partner asked him to set him up with her but wanted more info such as her looks and figure, etc. After checking her out for his partner Carl decided to keep CeCe for himself. I wonder how much longer they remained partners. Carl has two children and CeCe has two children form previous marriages their names are Scott, James, Annie, and Michael deceased at rest in Heaven. No grandchildren as yet.

Carl previously worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years and is currently working for Big 5 Sporting Goods in Red Bluff as the store manager.

Carl’s favorite or fondest memory is associated with playing 17 years in a league softball, five years at Beach Volleyball in LaJolla and giving a Eulogy for Dan Canfield.

Claim to fame or greatest achievement or award.   Being asked to be the best man in 5 different weddings, some are still together in spite of that.

Favorite past time besides golf is sitting back and smelling the roses on his Patio boat.

When asked “What would be the number one thing you want people to say about you or to remember you by” That I will make a great greeter at Wal-Mart someday.

One of Carl’s wishes is after 45 years of Golf; I would really like to get a hole in one, even if the whole club was there?? I suppose they would have to be for Carl to be believed.

Carl’s says his favorite past time is drinking beer in which he says he is pretty darn good at! His favorite movies are Romancing the stone, Ghost, and Indiana Jones fan!

Favorite Songs include “on and on”, by Steve Bishop, All night long by Lionel Ritchie. Favorite Restaurant would be Jack’s Bar and Grill for special occasions (of course) and the La Conquistador for Margaritas.

Nick name “Black Cloud” was given to Carl for his unwavering beliefs that what can possibly go wrong will always happen! If you’re in a hurry to get somewhere important the traffic light Gods knows his car and will change every light to Red just to play with his mind. Goes a long way in explaining his chipping strategy. Honest Injun!!!!

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor

Good day Mr. Faller- Just some newsworthy for your wall of shame segment or whatever for next issue of newsletter. Yesterday I played nine holes with Charles Gilbreath (witness) and Mike Canavan and I have to tell you this might go down as a record for hole number 7! You tell me!  His score for this hole only was a mere 19! Mike teed up hit a worm burner about 45 yards, hit his second shot which was a great shot and would have gone on the green however the wind was blowing pretty good and ball hit edge and dropped down in sand and this is when the fun begins! Poor Mike he then took 15 strokes to get out now if my math is any good at this point he is at 17 strokes, and then he THANKFULLY 2 putted in for a total of 19! You can only imagine how many 4 letter words were coming out of his mouth, some I never heard of! Moral of story, never, never give up!

Your fellow golf budding,
Jim Reyes

Dear JR

Thank you so much for your letter. I must note to our readers your letter came in just after we published the last newsletter. Still the story is well worth for print. With so many nicknames giver to Mr. Canavan I suppose one more won’t hurt.  How about simply “XIX”

==================================================================================

Dear Ed (Rick)

I noticed in the last Club Championship just one super senior bothered to sign up for the tournament? Doesn’t this put that one player in an unfair situation in having to compete with younger guys?

Just Curious

Dear Curious

This has been a problem that seems to be getting worse each year. I am not sure I know why. The club has done everything to have members from each age group compete at this tournament that we can truly call our own. The open competition is for all the younger players that generally have lower handicaps. The seniors (under 70) compete in their category and anyone over 70 are Super Seniors. Some believe that the handicap system equals everything out. The truth is the older we get the shorter our game. I would hope we could get more in the super senior out to compete. We give 100 % handicaps, and the club picks up the cost for week only player to play on weekend so I don’t know what else we can do. Anyone have an Idea I would love to hear from our older members.

Ed

Bailey Creek

For all those that did not make the trip you missed out on a surprising beautiful day.  Thank you Charles for all you did to make it an outstanding outing. This is truly one the most scenic golf courses in all of Northern California. The prices you negotiated for our membership were a great deal and many of the members look forward to next year’s trip. Answer to Woody’s Quiz

1. The original ball remained the ball in play since it was found within five minutes after search for it had begun and the player had not played a stroke with the provisional ball (see Rule 27-2b). The fact that the player lifted and dropped the provisional ball under Rule 28c is irrelevant. 1.

The competitor must replace the ball under penalty of one stroke -- Rule 18-2a. The competitor is not considered to have made a stroke.
