From The Woody’s Perch,

“The rules of Golf”

 Rule 6-2

Handicap Recorded on Score Card by Committee is Incorrect

  1. The Tournament Committee recorded the handicaps on the score cards incorrectly. At the completion of the round, the players have returned the score cards with the incorrect handicaps. Are the players responsible for these handicaps, or are they absolved from penalty as it was the Committee’s error?

What if I run out of Golf Balls?

      2.  If a player runs out of golf balls during a round, may he borrow a ball from another player?

You will find the Answers to Woody’s Perch Quiz on the last page.

Meet Tom Baird

Tom Baird officially came into this world on July 12, 1938 in the large metropolis of Aromas, Ca. Tom enjoyed his youth running around the hills in and around Arroyo Grande/Atascadero, Ca. Tom graduated from Atascadero High School known as the “Greyhounds” and went on to receive an associate degree from Hancock College in Santa Maria, Ca. He continued his education in Aerospace technical studies at Cal-Poly San Louis Obispo and at San Jose State University. Gee’s all this just to become our handicap Chairman! After his studies Tom joined the US Naval Reserve 1957-1967.  He spent his Active duty service in US Navy 1958 to July 1960. This certainly would account for his unwavering respect and admiration for the men and women who served their country during time of war and conflict.

Tom has been married to his lovely wife Pauline for forty five years. Tom and Pauline raised two sons, David and Darren. They also have one Granddaughter Sabrina, Grandsons Shawn, Alexander, and Christopher. Wait there’s more! Last but not least, Great Granddaughter Katelyn.

Tom’s favorite story; it was around December 1964 when Pauline and Tom met at Sisters Hospital in Santa Maria. Pauline was working as a receptionist/health insurance/PBX Operator.  Having a keen eye for beauty Tom was giving Pauline a long, long look over as he was walking through the lobby.  Paying no attention to where he was walking Tom walked right into the heavy wooden exit doors nose first! OUCH! Looking back somewhat embarrassed at Pauline he notes, she was laughing most heartily. (Sounds to me she may have been giving Tom the look over also)

Tom loves Golf, Snow skiing, water skiing, hiking, and fitness. Fondest memory was the courtship and marrying Pauline.

Tom and Pauline bought property here in 1986 and skied at Lake Shasta since the     early 60's. They moved to Cottonwood after his retirement from Lockheed Martin in July 1998 after 38 years where he managed a group of Electrical and Mechanical engineers responsible for Satellite Final Assembly, Systems Test, and Launch Operations.

Day of fame: Tom says nothing compares to the miracle of a new borne children we were indeed blessed with the birth of our Children/Grand Children and Great Granddaughter.

Favorite accomplishment was winning the NCGA Zone Qualifier at Churn Creek with my Grandson
Shawn four years ago (he was age 16) will always be a fond memory.

Editor’s monthly golf joke

Use old golf balls
Ralph goes for a quick round of golf, and at the first tee, Bill is about to tee off in front of him. Bill takes a brand new ball out of his bag, and places it on the tee and slices into the trees.
"Damn!" He reaches into his bag and takes out another brand new ball and tees it up. Thwack! He then hooks it miles into the bushes.
"Damn!" He stomps back to his bag for another ball, when Ralph approaches him. "Err, excuse me, but I notice you're losing a lot of brand new balls. Why don't you use an old one?" Bill looks at Ralph.
"Because I never bloody have one!!!!!!"

March Golf one liners

Golf is an easy game... it's just hard to play.

If there is any larceny in man, golf will bring it out.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor

I noticed some of the pictures Barbara Kapsenberg took at our 4 ball event posted on our website. I’m sure the members appreciate the time she spent in her effort as do I.  The sequence of Kenneth Günter’s swing was of particular interest. It shows a fairly decent technique however not being one to cast any doubt on your selection of these pictures, I am curious as to why you pick him since after the conclusion of his swing the ball remains on the Tee?

Signed;  Don't tell

Dear Lee

Very Astute observation!

- Thanks, I just didn't notice it at all!! Shows my "extended" knowledge of golf!! Barbara

Laws of Golf
  March 2010.

Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play.  If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down.

Answer to Woody’s Perch Quiz;

1.  Rule 6-2 applies. The player must ensure the handicap recorded on the score card is correct. If the handicap is higher than what the player is entitled and it affects the number of strokes received, he shall be disqualified. If the incorrect handicap is lower than the correct handicap, the score with the lower handicap must stand.

2.   Yes. There is nothing in the Rules of Golf that prohibits a player from borrowing a golf ball from an opponent or fellow-competitor. A player who runs out of balls may get a new supply from any source, provided he does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7) in the process. Although golf balls are part of a player’s equipment, the only type of equipment that the Rules limit the borrowing of is clubs Rule 4-4(Decision 5-1/5)
